Training Log: Bike 20 miles then a biceps-triceps workout

You know, I haven’t run all week. All these doctor appts, x-rays, MRI’s and researching my injury has really got me thinking about the damage I am doing to my knee. It has almost made me think like a normal person. Unfortunately, there is still that part of my brain that makes me unreasonable when it comes to working out and training.
I have good days and bad days when it comes to my knee. Sometimes the pain isn’t too bad and sometimes it hurts like hell. Overall though, the knee feels like it is getting a bit better. Laying off of running is helping. However, I am losing my base. I am not worrying about my aerobic base too much. I am mostly concerned about conditioning my legs to handle long distances.
I woke up around 4am and heard the rain. So I went back to sleep. Sometimes I think the good Lord is trying to get me to stay off the knee. It was raining on and off until about 6:30 or 7am, after which it cleared up and the sun bore down. I decided to take a break from my long run to let the knee heal up so, instead, I did a 20 mile bike ride. Honestly, I really missed cycling. It has been a while. I started getting that same feeling I had when I was training for my first triathlon. I would be lying if I told you that it did not make me feel like getting back into triathlon training.
Immediatly after I finished my ride I headed to my workout room and hammered out a biceps and triceps workout.
Ok, so I haven’t made a decision about what to do with my training. I may just take it easy on running and just go for it on marathon day. I already know that I can only run a little over half the marathon distance after which time I will more than likely have to walk or run/walk at best. My knee pain gets pretty bad after the half way point. The pain of running the marathon will be further exacerbated since I won’t be able to put in the training miles between now and the marathon. I will try to get a couple short runs and, hopefully, do a long run next week. I will cross train with the bike and do some strength training. With this knee injury I will take things one day at a time. My biggest fear is that I tear up the knee and have to stop training for the Lava Man triathlon.
I have physical therapy on Tuesday and Thursday. I will see how that goes.

Good to see you back on the bike! Your words seem to be showing a renewed sense of happiness that has been lacking the last few weeks — good for you!
Jeff… I have to admit that it felt refreshing to do something other than running. I like triathlons because I can train in 3 sports. Marathon training is a bit too one-dimensional for me, not to mention that I don’t like running all that much. I wish I could run like you, I would probably like it a whole lot more.
I’m looking forward to your decision, Boomer. Maybe physical therapy will be the factor. If you can slowly strengthen the knee and keep it loose, you can knock out that marathon. I’d be tempted to toss back some Aleve and go for it that day.
Steve… I am also looking forward to my decision! I will go one day at a time. I am leaning towards doing the marathon, however, my run training will be scaled back so I know I will have a tough time at the marathon.
bicycling should help with the knee, keeping it from swaying while applying pressure.
I am recovering from lithotripsy surgery today, which successfully blasted the 2nd stone. Next week the urologist will remove the stent.
Quentin… Is the recovery period from your surgery going ok?
