Workout: Swim 1100 Yards, i30x5 Biceps, Triceps

I hit the pool at 5:40am. There was a bit of a morning chill accompanied by a breeze, but the water temp was a nice 80 degrees. The pool opens at 5am and there are a lot of people swimming. I had to share a lane for about 10 minutes. I did 3×200 and 1×500. I am still working on my stroke. I need to start bilateral breathing. Before I stopped swimming last summer, I was beginning to get more comfortable with bilateral breathing, however, I am back to breathing only on my right side. Breathing on both sides is a tough thing for me to do. Why? Who knows… more likely it is because I am old dog trying to learn new tricks.
After work I knocked out a biceps and triceps workout. i30x5 was tough today. Doubling up this workout with swimming is a challenge. Today’s workout, while challenging, was good. I still have a good pump a few hours after finishing.

my bilateral breathing is pretty comfortable right now …1.2.3, breath …1.2.3 breath ….that is basically all I think. BUT I have noticed that during my long swims that I am stronger breathing every other stroke? In a 25meter pool I gasp on average 5 times each length using the bilateral technique. Breathing every other stroke my average is 8 gulps of air. My heart rate is so much lower after an interval when I take 8 breathes? weird.
30 degrees on the MS Gulf Coast, so not swimming for me; although I would love to swim in an indoor heated pool. A former BSA lifeguard and Red Cross Life guard, I love the challenges and health benefits of swimming laps. BSA lifeguard test is definitely more challenging than the Red Cross course. Remember the mile swim?
Thanks for the medicine ball pointers with push ups……
Jeff… Last summer I was starting to get my bilat breathing. However, I too notice that I often end up doing one sided breathing on long hauls. I need to be able to “go long” while bilateral breathing.
Quentin… 30 degrees on the Gulf Coast. Man, that is crazy! The ocean temp here is 78 degree right now. The pool is around 80. I have nothing to complain about!
Hey, will they let an older guy like me get a lifeguard cert?
